Hours after elder brother Sean found the net for Newcastle against Burnley, Matty got off the mark for Toronto in a 3-1 home victory over Dallas in the MLS. 

That came almost two years to the day since his last goal, while on loan at League Two Mansfield Town.

Matty wasn't the only former Magpie to find the net at the weekend, Joselu on target for Real Madrid in their 3-0 home win over Cadiz - his 15th club goal in league and cup so far this season.

Staying in Spain, Ayoze Perez scored for Real Betis in their 2-0 success at Real Osasuna. He's contributed nine in all competitions this time round to date.

Two added time goals turned defeat into victory for Newcastle U18s at Whitley Park on Saturday.

Trailing to a 41st minute effort from Sam Chambers, the game was in the third of the allotted extra minutes at the end of the second half when Alfie Harrison fired in.

It got even better for the Magpies a minute later, when Alex O'Donovan found the top right hand corner of the Leeds net from outside the area.

Following confirmation of Leicester City's return to the Premier League as Championship title winners, Ipswich Town will join them after finishing second by beating Huddersfield Town 2-0 at home on Saturday.

Southampton and Norwich City were already assured of a spot in the play-offs and they are joined by Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion, after the Baggies defeated Preston North End 3-0 at the Hawthorns.

Ex-Magpie Nolberto Solano has been confirmed as the new Manager of Blyth Spartans, as they start to rebuild under new ownership following relegation from National League North.

It's the latest step on a coaching journey for the Peruvian, which has included spells with clubs in England, Peru, Canada, Thailand and Sweden in addition to the Peru national side.

The draw for the 2024 NI SuperCup competition has taken place, with SJP old boy Aaron Hughes the guest of honour at the ceremony.

However there was no sign of a team representing Newcastle United in the draw this year, the Magpies having returned to the event in 2023.

Sandro still on track 
for August return


From NUFC, Thursday:

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting Rules.

He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his future conduct.

The banning period is fully suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, meaning he will be available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.

Provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.

As acknowledged by the FA in the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented. Sandro made full admissions as to his betting activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other evidence to support misconduct
proceedings.

Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full support and will continue to train with his teammates.

Italian international Tonali admitted 50 breaches of FA Rule E8 for placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023.

His bets included four Newcastle games that he played in and one he was on the bench for, backing his side to win in all cases:

An accumulator bet involving either Newcastle to beat Brighton on September 2 2023 or Newcastle to beat Burnley on September 30 2023

An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat Brentford on September 16 2023

A single bet on Newcastle to beat Manchester City on September 27 2023

An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat West Ham on October 8 2023.

With no extension to his original ban, that leaves him free to resume his playing career on August 27th.

2024/25:
Japan tour claim

The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League sides in July.

They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July 31st. 

No official confirmation of either game has been received as yet, with Urawa fan sites also mentioning the possible Magpies meeting.

Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th. Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto. 

Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to lifting the Japan Cup. We then returned in August 1996, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka.

For those who haven't already done so as part of the long-term deals, season ticket renewals can now be made online here until 5pm on Monday May 20th.

Meanwhile, home cup ticket schemes for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup are also open now, with a closing date of 5pm on Friday June 21st. Remember that separate sign-ups are required for both.

Depending on our finishing place in the PL, a further home cup ticket scheme for European competition may become available.

Cup ticket prices are unchanged from 2023/24:

Carabao Cup: £20 & £25 adults / £10 & £15 others

FA Cup: £30 & £35 adults / £15 & £20 others

More train strikes 

Further industrial action has been announced by the ASLEF union - although no Newcastle games are directly affected this time round.

A rolling series of one day strikes will see drivers walk out for 24 hours as follows. A separate overtime ban will run from Mon 06.05.2024 until Sat 11.05.2024:

Tue 07.05.2024: c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express, South Western Railway.

1953 Graeme Souness born, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Mgr 2004-06)


Not missed....

Having served Spurs, the smoggies, Liverpool, Sampdoria and Rangers as a player, Souness then managed at Ibrox and Anfield before joining Galatasaray. 

A return to these shores came in 1996 with Southampton, although he just managed just one season at the Saints before moving overseas again, with Torino and Benfica.

March 2000 saw him take over at Blackburn Rovers, steering them back to the Premier League and winning the League Cup. 

Newcastle turned to him to fill the void left by Bobby Robson's enforced departure in September 2004, Souness watching his former side lose 3-0 to his future one from an Executive Box at SJP before taking over.

His first season saw Newcastle progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and Quarter Finals of the UEFA, but defeats in both to Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon within four days were major setbacks.

Craig Bellamy returned from his Celtic loan and was sold on to Blackburn before the start of the next season - having fallen out with Souness over his place in the side and other disciplinary-related transgressions.

His influence was brought to bear on other transfers, with Patrick Kluivert, Aaron Hughes, Andy O'Brien, Laurent Robert and Jermaine Jenas also departing.

Loan deals also saw James Milner and Nicky Butt depart as Emre, Craig Moore, Albert Luque, Michael Owen and Nobby Solano were added to January buys Amdy Faye, Celestine Babayaro and Jean-Alain Boumsong (the latter deemed not good enough for Newcastle by Bobby Robson months earlier).

By February 2006 though, Souness was gone - defeat at Manchester City leaving United fifteenth with fan unrest increasing since a particularly gutless League Cup defeat against a second-choice Wigan Athletic side.

While the fitness of Owen and Luque made his job more difficult, Souness was ultimately betrayed by many of those who he'd brought in to the SJP dressing room.  

He became a familiar feature on our TV screens as a Sky Sports pundit, where he remained consistently charmless when discussing the Magpies.

However Souness did show a more caring side when completing a relay swim of the English Channel in 2023, raising over £1m for Debra UK - a charity supporting those affected by epidermolysis bullosa (EB).

City were victorious despite playing with ten men for over an hour after Max Woosnam was injured.

United provided the opposition in a benefit match at Oakwell for Tykes forward Beaumont Asquith, who netted a first half hat trick.

The conclusion of the game saw Barnsley presented with the Third Division (North) Championship shield and medals.

Asquith received £250 from the proceeds of the game but within days had his transfer request granted and left the club.

Joining Manchester United, he played just once before the outbreak of war saw league football suspended. By 1945 he had returned to Barnsley.

On the same day as United lost at Oakwell, another Magpies XI were in action on the banks of the Clyde at Cappielow.

The game was arranged as a benefit for Morton player Alex Ritchie, who had been expected to sign for Newcastle before suffering a career-ending knee injury.

With everything to play for after a scoreless first leg on Tyneside, Didier Drogba broke Newcastle hearts with a goal in each half at a packed Stade Velodrome. 

A non-challenge from Hugo Viana allowed the home side to counter attack, Matthieu Flamini
supplying Drogba to shoot past Shay Given after shrugging off Aaron Hughes. 

United attempted to get back into the tie and had their moments after the break, with Lee Bowyer carelessly shooting wide and penalty claims when Shola Ameobi was impeed.

Slack marking from a free kick near the end settled it though, with Given then blocking another effort as Drogba went for a treble.

Future Magpie Habib Beye appeared for l'OM and also started in the final, but finished on the losing side as Valencia triumphed 2-0 in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

2021 Almost four years to the day since the promotion celebrations were followed by HMRC searches on club offices, Newcastle confirmed that the matter was concluded:

"HMRC has today given formal confirmation that it is discontinuing the four-year long criminal investigation into the tax treatment of agents/players payments involving Newcastle United Football Club.”
